What is aerial / drone photography?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
Our aerial photography setup
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

What is aerial photography used for?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Drone photography laws
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.
You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.
