Explaining aerial or drone photography

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.

Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

AIM aerial photography System

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws of drone photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.

The CAA state that a drone must: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There are too many drone photography applications to count. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Real Estate

Are you looking to find buyers for your property? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

It is possible to show exactly how large the building is and its shape, as well as its relationship to the environs in terms of where it is situated and any buildings or land that you own. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Vacation rental

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? To make sure you present a good look at your property, you can include drone aerial photographs and videos.

Our promotional video for Chez Mouret allowed the owners of the gates to explain their property with clear visual aid by allowing guests to see how the property is laid out in relation to itself and the surrounding areas.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. Drones are flexible enough to be used in place of a steady-cam or Ronin for seamlessly taking shots at close range. Even if you don’t see quite clearly how your video will benefit from aerial filming, we are more than willing to advise you and help you find a solution that works for you, so please don’t hesitate to call us.

Promo Videos

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. Mega Camps was one of the clients for whom we filmed a promotional film, and we loved every second of working with them.

Mega Camps is a company that loads kids with fun during their breaks from school with their exciting day activities such as a large slip’n’slide, a go-cart track, and numerous bouncy castles. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
