Explaining aerial or drone photography

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

The AIM aerial photography equipment

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Laws of drone photography

To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.

The CAA state that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Clients and applications for drone aerial photography

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Selling Real Estate

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

It is possible to show exactly how large the building is and its shape, as well as its relationship to the environs in terms of where it is situated and any buildings or land that you own. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Holiday Lets

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Films

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. With great help from the footage we were able to capture, Mega Camps was given the power to show exactly what they wanted customers to see, including the size and scope of their business, as well as their activities. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
