What does aerial/drone photography entail?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
AIM aerial photography System
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.
The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When is aerial photography needed?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.
A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Aerial photography laws
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.
