What does aerial/drone photography entail?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
Our aerial photography equipment
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When you can use aerial photography
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Drone photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be at least 150 meters away from congested areas not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
Applications for drone photography and clients
There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
