Explaining aerial or drone photography

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.

Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

What is aerial photography used for?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.

Laws governing drone photography

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.

Drone photography applications / clients

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. These are some of the projects we have completed for clients, feel free to contact us anytime if there something you would like to do other that what you find below:

Selling Your House

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Would a comprehensive overview of its ground plan and size advance a sale? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Vacation rental

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? To make sure you present a good look at your property, you can include drone aerial photographs and videos.

Our promotional video for Chez Mouret allowed the owners of the gates to explain their property with clear visual aid by allowing guests to see how the property is laid out in relation to itself and the surrounding areas.

Events & Music Videos

Filming your music video with drones is the solution you are looking for whether you want to shoot the entire video from a height, or only want to add some interesting variety to the video. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promo Films

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. With great help from the footage we were able to capture, Mega Camps was given the power to show exactly what they wanted customers to see, including the size and scope of their business, as well as their activities. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
