What does drone/aerial photography mean?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
The AIM aerial photography equipment
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.
Laws of drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.
The CAA state that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
