What does aerial/drone photography entail?

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

You don’t have to worry about additional expenditure over the course of your project as we are fully insured up to £5 million. In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

. From sporting events to film and TV, forestry surveying, real estate, building surveys and cartography, aerial photography has a wide array of applications, including of course, weddings. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There are too many drone photography applications to count. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Selling Your House

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Would a comprehensive overview of its ground plan and size advance a sale? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. To present potential buyers with an even more complete set of pictures and footage, we can include standard pictures of the property’s interior to the area and overhead shots we would normally take.

Holiday Lets

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Drone filming is the best solution for you whether you are interested in shooting the entire video from a height or would rather take only a few shots to add something to the video. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Videos

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
