What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
The AIM aerial photography equipment
The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When you can use aerial photography
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Drone photography laws
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
The CAA state that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
