What does drone/aerial photography mean?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
The AIM aerial photography system
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

What is aerial photography used for?
There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.
Drone photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
