Explaining aerial or drone photography

Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

Uses of aerial photography

. From sporting events to film and TV, forestry surveying, real estate, building surveys and cartography, aerial photography has a wide array of applications, including of course, weddings. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.

A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Real Estate

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

You will be able to show your buyers exactly how what shape or size the property is and how it is positioned in relation to other buildings or land that are yours and the larger surroundings. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Letting your property to holiday renters

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? Sure, you must be able to provide standard interior pictures of the rooms, but don’t you think you need to do more if your would-be guests have never visited your country or vicinity before? An incredible way to really show off your property is to add aerial images and video.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

We were able to achieve sweeping eye level shots, close in shots and of course, aerial shots, all with the drone which we used to shoot the whole video. Drones are flexible enough to be used in place of a steady-cam or Ronin for seamlessly taking shots at close range. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Films

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. We were happy to be involved in the promotional video for our client at Mega Camps.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
