Explaining aerial or drone photography
In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
AIM aerial photography System
At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

What is aerial photography used for?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There are so many uses for aerial photography that the limit is really your own imagination! One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Laws governing drone photography
To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
