What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When is aerial photography needed?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Laws governing aerial photography
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
