What is aerial / drone photography?

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

The AIM aerial photography system

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.

With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

Uses of aerial photography

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Laws governing drone photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Aerial photography clients / applications

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

The Property Market

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Would a comprehensive overview of its ground plan and size advance a sale? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Holiday rental

How do you convince holiday makers to rent your holiday let? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

With the drone, we were able to achieve more than aerial shots alone, including sweeping shots at eye level and close in shots. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. We are here to help with any questions you may have regarding how a drone will help make your video better and if you reach out to us, we’ll be glad to offer our expertise.

Promo Films

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. We were happy to be involved in the promotional video for our client at Mega Camps.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. With great help from the footage we were able to capture, Mega Camps was given the power to show exactly what they wanted customers to see, including the size and scope of their business, as well as their activities. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
