Explaining aerial or drone photography
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. The costly nature of such shoots meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford them.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
Our aerial photography setup
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

What is aerial photography used for?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Drone photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The CAA state that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.
You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.
