What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.

AIM aerial photography System

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.

We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When is aerial photography needed?

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.

Laws governing drone photography

The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There are so many applications for aerial photography. These are some of the projects we have completed for clients, feel free to contact us anytime if there something you would like to do other that what you find below:

The Property Market

Are you ready to sell your house? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

You will be able to show your buyers exactly how what shape or size the property is and how it is positioned in relation to other buildings or land that are yours and the larger surroundings. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Vacation rental

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? Sure, you must be able to provide standard interior pictures of the rooms, but don’t you think you need to do more if your would-be guests have never visited your country or vicinity before? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. A good number of well-known videos produced in recent times have made use of aerial filming, including the video for the latest song by Red Sky July filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Projects

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. Mega Camps was one of the clients for whom we filmed a promotional film, and we loved every second of working with them.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
