What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
AIM aerial photography System
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When is aerial photography needed?
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Laws governing aerial photography
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
Clients and applications for drone aerial photography
The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
