What is the meaning of aerial/drone photography?

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.

AIM aerial photography System

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

When you can use aerial photography

Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.

Laws governing drone photography

The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There are so many applications for aerial photography. You may find examples of some of our past projects below, but if you would like to do some other project, please let us know by contacting us:

Real Estate

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Would it benefit from a complete overview of the size and footprint of the grounds? Standard photography is not sufficient for capturing all the angles of a property and we have helped clients film and photograph their properties to ensure potential buyers have a more thorough look at the property.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. To present potential buyers with an even more complete set of pictures and footage, we can include standard pictures of the property’s interior to the area and overhead shots we would normally take.

Vacation rental

How do you make sure potential renters get to see your holiday rental property at its best? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? The best solution would be to add drone footage and pictures to portray your property in the best light.

Our promotional video for Chez Mouret allowed the owners of the gates to explain their property with clear visual aid by allowing guests to see how the property is laid out in relation to itself and the surrounding areas.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

We shot the entire video using the drone and we were able to do a whole lot more than shoot from above as we also shot at eye level and close range. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. We are here to help with any questions you may have regarding how a drone will help make your video better and if you reach out to us, we’ll be glad to offer our expertise.

Promotional Videos

Having been involved in promotional videos for a number of clients, it is easy to see how aerial photography and filming can add that extra look of professionalism to your client or business. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

Mega Camps are a company offering day activities to children during the school holidays – including a huge slip’n’slide, multiple bouncy castles, and a go-cart track. Mega Camps was able to use the promotional video we helped create to highlight the best parts of their business by showing the scope of the business and the activities they have. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
