What is aerial / drone photography?

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.

Our aerial photography equipment

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When you can use aerial photography

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws of drone photography

The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Clients for aerial photography and applications

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Attracting Property Buyers

Are you ready to sell your house? Would it benefit from a complete overview of the size and footprint of the grounds? Standard photography is not sufficient for capturing all the angles of a property and we have helped clients film and photograph their properties to ensure potential buyers have a more thorough look at the property.

Among the information you can present, it is possible to show the shape and size how the building is situated in relation to its environs, including any of your outhouses or land, if applicable. To present potential buyers with an even more complete set of pictures and footage, we can include standard pictures of the property’s interior to the area and overhead shots we would normally take.

Vacation rental

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? With aerial pictures and footage, you can highlight the best features of your building.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. Please contact us and let us know what concerns or questions you may have in case you are not yet sure how a drone can be of benefit to you and your project.

Promotional Projects

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

Mega Camps is a company that loads kids with fun during their breaks from school with their exciting day activities such as a large slip’n’slide, a go-cart track, and numerous bouncy castles. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. Our clients from Boundless TV needed exterior footage of the large manor house inside which their programme was set.
