Explaining aerial or drone photography

In the past, you had to come up with massive helicopter film crew fees in order to capture an image of the ground below from the sky. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

AIM aerial photography System

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.

The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws governing aerial photography

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.

The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.

Aerial photography clients / applications

The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

The Property Market

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? We have photographed and filmed numerous properties in order to give potential buyers a clear perspective of the property that is simply not possible to achieve with standard photographs alone.

Not only can you highlight the shape and size of the building, but you can also demonstrate its position and distance from other features in the surrounding area, including any land or outhouses you might own. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Holiday rental

What is the best way to portray your vacation rental to those who are interested in renting? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? To make sure you present a good look at your property, you can include drone aerial photographs and videos.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. Drones are flexible enough to be used in place of a steady-cam or Ronin for seamlessly taking shots at close range. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Projects

We have completed a good number of promotional videos for many clients and we are aware of just how much of a difference drone filming and photography can make to a promo campaign. One of our favourite clients who we worked with to produce a promotional video was Mega Camps.

Their business is all about kids as they provide exciting day activities for children when they are on a school break, including loads of bouncy castles, a go-cart track, and a large slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. We also worked with Boundless TV who wanted an aerial video of the giant manor house where they recorded their programme.
