What does aerial/drone photography entail?

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.

Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.

When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.

Our aerial photography setup

The drones we use here at the AIM are DJI manufactured. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.

Whether it is still image photography or film and video, the Inspire can capture the most breath-taking shots. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.

The Mavic comes in handy in tricky areas where the larger Inspire may not be able to perform well, thanks to its lightweight frame and portability. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When you can use aerial photography

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.

Aerial photography laws

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. You can expect only the highest level of ethics and professionalism from Aerial Image Masters because we always maintain the limits specified by these laws.

The CAA specifies that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be flown at a minimum distance of 150 metres away from places that are congested be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Clients and applications for drone aerial photography

There are so many applications for aerial photography. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:

Attracting Property Buyers

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. Take things up a notch when you use our package that lets you have regular interior images of the building with exterior images of the building itself and the surrounding area.

Vacation home to let

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? While you have to present standard interior pictures to potential renters, what do you do if they are entirely now to your locale or country? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

Our promotional video for Chez Mouret allowed the owners of the gates to explain their property with clear visual aid by allowing guests to see how the property is laid out in relation to itself and the surrounding areas.

Events & Music Videos

Filming your music video with drones is the solution you are looking for whether you want to shoot the entire video from a height, or only want to add some interesting variety to the video. With Red Sky July’s latest single under our belt, we at Aerial Image Masters are among those leading the movement of popular videos that have been shot using aerial filming.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. You may not know how a drone could fit in with your video, however, if you call us we are happy to add in our expertise to offer suggestions and solutions.

Promotional Projects

With the numerous promotional videos we have worked on, we have witnessed first-hand the special touch that can be added with drone filming and photography to make a business look more professional. We worked on a promotional video project for Mega Camps, a company we were more than happy to work with.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
