What does aerial/drone photography entail?
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

When is aerial photography needed?
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.
A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.
Laws governing aerial photography
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
