What does drone/aerial photography mean?

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.

Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.

Our aerial photography equipment

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. The Inspire 1 allows us to record dramatic shots regardless of the situation due to the 4K broadcast-level camera attached to it. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

Uses of aerial photography

There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.

Aerial photography laws

The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Clients and applications for drone aerial photography

There are so many applications for aerial photography. Here are just some of the projects that we have worked on, please contact us if you have any other projects in mind:

Selling Your House

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Would you like to fully capture the footprint of the grounds and the size of the property? Standard photography is not sufficient for capturing all the angles of a property and we have helped clients film and photograph their properties to ensure potential buyers have a more thorough look at the property.

It is possible to show exactly how large the building is and its shape, as well as its relationship to the environs in terms of where it is situated and any buildings or land that you own. To present potential buyers with an even more complete set of pictures and footage, we can include standard pictures of the property’s interior to the area and overhead shots we would normally take.

Vacation rental

How do you convince holiday makers to rent your holiday let? It is compulsory to provide pictures of the interior of the rooms you are letting, but shouldn’t you consider that whoever will be renting your property might not be familiar with your area? The best solution would be to add drone footage and pictures to portray your property in the best light.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

Using our drone to film the entire video, we were able to shoot from above as well as at a close range and at eye level. Once you have a drone, you can do without a Ronin or steady cam as drones make it possible to produce seamless footage shot at a close range. We are here to help with any questions you may have regarding how a drone will help make your video better and if you reach out to us, we’ll be glad to offer our expertise.

Promo Videos

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
