What does drone/aerial photography mean?

A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

The AIM aerial photography equipment

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?

There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.

A drone can be a great alternative to a steady-cam as a result of its camera gimbles which provide a level of stability. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.

Aerial photography laws

The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be at least 150 meters away from congested areas be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be no closer than 50 metres or be directly above of any persons, buildings, vessels, or automobiles no matter the height, except in cases where the pilot controls those variables. These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.

Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.

Drone photography applications / clients

There are too many drone photography applications to count. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Attracting Property Buyers

Are you ready to sell your house? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? Many have come to us to help them film and photograph their properties as aerial photography is superior to standard photography and is better for providing potential customers with a better perspective of the building.

It is possible to show exactly how large the building is and its shape, as well as its relationship to the environs in terms of where it is situated and any buildings or land that you own. We can offer a package that includes both standard interior pictures as well as the overhead and area shots to really sell your property to potential buyers.

Letting your property to holiday renters

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? To make sure you present a good look at your property, you can include drone aerial photographs and videos.

The promotional video we created for Chez Mouret provided the owners of the gates with a useful visual aid to illustrate the layout of the property and its environs to guests.

Events & Music Videos

Drone filming is the best solution for you whether you are interested in shooting the entire video from a height or would rather take only a few shots to add something to the video. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

We were able to achieve sweeping eye level shots, close in shots and of course, aerial shots, all with the drone which we used to shoot the whole video. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. Even if you don’t see quite clearly how your video will benefit from aerial filming, we are more than willing to advise you and help you find a solution that works for you, so please don’t hesitate to call us.

Promo Videos

Having been involved in promotional videos for a number of clients, it is easy to see how aerial photography and filming can add that extra look of professionalism to your client or business. We were happy to be involved in the promotional video for our client at Mega Camps.

Mega Camps is a company that loads kids with fun during their breaks from school with their exciting day activities such as a large slip’n’slide, a go-cart track, and numerous bouncy castles. The footage we captured allowed Mega Camps to clearly show the scope and scale of their business to customers – as well as adding an extra bit of pizazz to the activities they have on offer. For Boundless TV, we were pleased to film the exterior of the gigantic manor house where they record their programme.
