Explaining aerial or drone photography
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!
To make sure the perfect shot is captured, our professional drone photographers work in twos, with one person controlling the drone and the other controlling the camera, thus ensuring the perfect shots can be captured.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
Our aerial photography setup
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. With the 360-degree gimble on the Inspire 1 increasing stability, we are able to cover every possible angle without any loss of detail.
We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
There is a long list of applications for which aerial photography is useful, from entertainment purposes such as film and TV, weddings, and sporting events to a variety of other applications such as cartography, real estate, and forestry applications. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Aerial photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The CAA state that a drone must: directly be in the pilot’s VLOS or line of sight be at least 150 meters away from congested areas not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more not be directly overhead of (at any height) or within 50 meters of persons, vehicles, vessels and property unless those persons are ‘under the control of the pilot’ These laws are for us as professionals to work within, and we do not expect you, as our client, to be familiar with every rule.
You can rest assured we have sufficient experience in drone law and we can’t wait to talk about your needs for your projects and how best we can achieve the results you want.
Applications for drone photography and clients
There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
