What is aerial / drone photography?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
There is no limit to where aerial filming and photography can prove useful as it can be deployed literally anywhere aerial shots will add value; sporting events, concerts, construction projects, heritage sites, weddings.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. We also have the light, durable and versatile Mavic Pro as part of our collection. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

When you can use aerial photography
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Drone photography laws
To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
Applications for drone photography and clients
There are too many drone photography applications to count. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:
