What is aerial / drone photography?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.
The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!
Our aerial photography equipment
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model also comes fitted with an excellent 4K camera which means it can also capture stills and videos. The gimble on this camera allows for vertical pan shots.
The benefit for the Mavic is that due to its lightweight frame and portability, it can be used for trickier environments where transporting the larger Inspire may be a challenge. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When is aerial photography needed?
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. In television and media, drones are used to achieve the most interesting shots from various angles to add a bit of variety to the setting of a scene, show viewers a particular point of view, or highlight an object.
Aerial photography laws
Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
The CAA’s laws specify that a drone has to: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people not be higher than 400ft above the ground and not be more than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
You bet we are conversant enough in drone law to that you can trust us and we would love to discuss how we can go about making the best of your project.
Clients for aerial photography and applications
The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
