What does drone/aerial photography mean?
A few years ago, capturing an aerial view of a location meant hiring film crews in helicopters to navigate the area, at extremely high prices. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.
Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
Our aerial photography equipment
Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the DJI-Inspire 1, we can take dramatic shots in all scenarios due to the 4K state of the art camera attached. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. Apart from the Inspire, we also have the highly ranked Mavic Pro. This model is equally able to capture 4K-quality stills and videos. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble, for exceptional handheld shots on every project.

When you can use aerial photography
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There are many other ways aerial photography can be used; all you have to do is think it and it can be done! A major advantage of aerial photography is low down photographs can be achieved as easily as aerial photographs.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Drone photography laws
To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.
The laws of the CAA demand that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
Drone photography applications / clients
The applications for drone aerial photography are endless. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
