What does drone/aerial photography mean?

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.

Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

The AIM aerial photography system

DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.

The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.

The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. The battery backup on both drones allows 20-minutes of flight time and we always move with additional batteries to ensure that we can complete your project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

When is aerial photography needed?

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.

A drone can be a good substitute for a steady-cam due to the stabilising nature of the camera gimbles used. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.

Laws of drone photography

To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within the VLOS (visual line of sight) of the pilot be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Applications for drone photography and clients

With drone aerial photography, there is no limit to how it can be applied. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:

Selling Your House

is there a piece of real estate you are trying to sell? Are you interested in having the size and ground plan of the building completely captured? Regular photographs are great, but are not sufficient for giving potential buyers a good look at a building, but we have captured several buildings to produce images and footage that paint the most accurate picture of a property and its features.

It is possible to show exactly how large the building is and its shape, as well as its relationship to the environs in terms of where it is situated and any buildings or land that you own. We can help you impress potential buyers by taking standard photographs of your building’s interior combined with drone shots that perfectly capture the exterior.

Vacation home to let

How do you convince holiday makers to rent your holiday let? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? The best solution would be to add drone footage and pictures to portray your property in the best light.

We were able to provide an explanatory visual solution in the form of a promotional video for Chez Mouret to help guests get a clear picture of the property’s layout and that of its environs.

Events & Music Videos

Whether you want to add an interesting dimension or perspective to your video shoot, or you would like to film the whole video from the air, then aerial filming is perfect for you. Among the many top notch videos that have adopted the brilliant innovation of filming with drones is a new song by Red Sky July, a video that was filmed by Aerial Image Masters.

We shot the entire video using the drone and we were able to do a whole lot more than shoot from above as we also shot at eye level and close range. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promotional Films

After having worked on countless promotional films for many different businesses, we can easily say there is nothing that adds to the professional look of your business or client. Mega Camps was one of the clients for whom we filmed a promotional film, and we loved every second of working with them.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. Not only did the shots we took show precisely how large and wide their business is, but they also spiced things up a bit by adding a bit of glamour to the exciting activities they had for children. For another one of our clients, Boundless TV, we took exterior footage of the imposing manor house within which their programme was recorded.
