Explaining aerial or drone photography
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. The costly nature of the process at the time, meant that aerial shoots were only afforded by TV and film houses with deep pockets.
Today, a small drone, or unmanned aircraft, fitted with the right cameras can enable you to get the same aerial shots as the biggest film studio, whilst spending relatively little. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!
Professional drone photographers and filmmakers like us normally have a two-person team per drone, comprised of a pilot and another person as camera operator in order to ensure the perfect shot is captured.
When it comes to the use of aerial filming and photography, the opportunities are endless. From giving your wedding a unique feel to surveillance of areas of interest for wildlife photography, there are no limits.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.
We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

In which scenarios is aerial photography required?
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.
Laws of drone photography
To fulfil the need to regulate the use and flying of commercial drones, the Civil Aviation Authority has created laws. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts be no higher than 400ft above the surface and no further than 500 meters (1,640ft) from the pilot be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.
Drone law is no problem for us and we are ready when you are to discuss what you have in mind for your project and how best to work so we end up with results you are satisfied with.
Clients and applications for drone aerial photography
There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. While we have included examples of projects we have worked on in the past, please let us know if there are any other projects you would like to complete:
