What is aerial / drone photography?

Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.

Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. By sending up a small aircraft, or drone, it is possible to gain a new perspective on a familiar scene, and capture exciting shots that enhance any production, document or event!

For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.

There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.

Our aerial photography setup

Our preferred choice of drones here at AIM are DJI models. With the 4K broadcast-level camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to record dramatic shots in all settings. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.

The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. The battery time on each of the drones is around 20 minutes but we always come prepared with the right number of backup batteries required to get the job done. We also have the Sony A7 camera which is excellent for the capture of smooth hand held shots.

When you can use aerial photography

Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. That is by no means an exhaustive list as whatever you imagine aerial photography can be useful for, it can be done. One of the best parts about drone photography is images closer to the ground can be captured just as it is possible to take pictures from a height.

There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.

Drone photography laws

The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.

According to the CAA, a drone has to: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be flown within a range no further than 1,640ft or 500 metres from the pilot and at most 400ft above the ground never be directly above any individuals, vessels, automobiles, or property, no matter the height, or as close as 50 metres to any of the aforementioned if they are not under the pilot’s control. We do our work professionally as we operate within all the laws, meaning you, as our client, don’t have to bother about knowing all the rules.

We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.

Applications for drone photography and clients

There is no limit to the number of ways aerial photography can be applied. You may find examples of some of our past projects below, but if you would like to do some other project, please let us know by contacting us:

Real Estate

Do you have a property you would like to sell? Do you need a proper overview of the building’s ground plan and size? We have helped many clients provide potential buyers with a clearer perspective of their properties than can be achieved with regular photographs.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. To present potential buyers with an even more complete set of pictures and footage, we can include standard pictures of the property’s interior to the area and overhead shots we would normally take.

Vacation rental

What do you do when you want potential renters to see your holiday let in all its glory? Standard pictures might be sufficient for showing the interior of the building, but what happens when your potential renters are first timers in your country or locale? One way to solve that problem is to show your property in all its glory with drone footage and images.

We made a promo video for Chez Mouret which made it possible for guests to see clearly how the property was positioned in relation to its surroundings.

Events & Music Videos

Shooting your video with a drone is the right choice if you would like to add a couple of interesting angles to your shoot and it also works just as great for shooting a whole video. There are numerous high profile videos that are embracing this new advance in filming and Aerial Image Masters have been part of this movement when we were commissioned to film the video for Red Sky July’s newest single.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. You don’t need a Ronin or steady-cam take hitch-free close-in shots once you have a drone because drones are very versatile. Even if you don’t see quite clearly how your video will benefit from aerial filming, we are more than willing to advise you and help you find a solution that works for you, so please don’t hesitate to call us.

Promotional Projects

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. Mega Camps was one of the clients for whom we filmed a promotional film, and we loved every second of working with them.

They are a company that caters to children during the school holidays by keeping them engaged with fun day activities such as go-carting, bouncing in castles, and sliding on a gigantic slip’n’slide. In addition to highlighting the scale or scope of Mega Camps’ business to customers, the videos we made using the drone added extra spice to their activities to show just how much fun they are for the kids. In another promotional video, this time for Boundless TV, the client wanted us to film the exterior of the manor house where their programme was recorded.
