Explaining aerial or drone photography
In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
Today, you can get the same aerial shots as the big Hollywood studios armed with just a drone fitted-out with high quality cameras, without paying over the odds. Aerial shots using a drone or light aircraft can provide a new perspective on any scene.
For professional drone photographers and filmmakers, the work must be split between a pilot and a camera operator for the best possible results to be achieved; each person must focus on one aspect of the job.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
Our aerial photography equipment
DJI manufactured drones are what we use most of the time here at AIM. With the 4K UHD camera on the Inspire 1, we are able to deliver dramatic shots at every turn. The state of the art 360 degree gimble, which stabilises the camera even when there is lots of movement of the drone, means that there is no end to the angles and perspectives that we can capture.
The Inspire 1’s unique features are why we are able to provide quality shoot results on all kinds of projects. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. With the gimble on the camera, we are able to easily take vertical shots.
The lightweight and portable frame of the Mavic means that it can be used in challenging situations where the larger Inspire 1 may not be sufficiently manoeuvrable. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. In addition, we have a Sony A7 camera, as well as a gimble, to gain smooth hand held shots, all of which will be available on every shoot with us.

What is aerial photography used for?
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.
With the camera gimbles that drones have, they have better stability and so can be used in place of a steady-cam. You might have noticed that many TV programmes use drone shots to take fascinating angles which are used to lay emphasis on an object, show a point of view, or switch up the setting of a scene.
Laws of drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority guides the commercial use and flying of drones with its laws. At Aerial Image Masters, we are fully aware of these laws and don’t exceed the limits as we always operate at the highest level of professionalism and ethics.
The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within direct, unaided visual line of sight (VLOS) of the pilot be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground be kept at a distance of at least 50 metres away and never directly above any buildings, people, vehicles, or vessels that are not ‘under the control of the pilot’ We don’t expect our clients to know all the laws as well as we do, so you don’t have to bother about them as they are for us to guide our work.
We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.
Clients for aerial photography and applications
There are too many drone photography applications to count. We have provided some examples of work we have done in the past, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if there is something else you would lie us to work on:
