What is aerial / drone photography?
Before now, the only way to get an aerial view of locations or events was to hire helicopter film crews at prices that were outside most budgets. Aerial shoots were, therefore, exclusively the realm of Hollywood and companies with deep pockets.
Thanks to technological advancements, however, all you need to capture aerial shots today is an unmanned, lightweight aircraft with cameras, which makes it possible for anyone to enjoy spectacular shots that rival those from the biggest film studios. With the imagery from a small aircraft above, you can gain a new perspective on the location of interest.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
Aerial photography can be useful in a wide range of situations, from better aerial coverage at that local festival to a better view of the landscape during a construction project.
The AIM aerial photography equipment
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. We are also able to cover every possible angle with the Inspire 1 as a result of the 360-degree gimble in place, which ensures camera stability.
We are able to guarantee magnificent shots on both still photography and video due to the top of the range features and exceptional quality of the Inspire 1. The compact and durable Mavic Pro is another camera we use in addition to the Inspire 1. This drone is also fitted out with a 4K camera making it another excellent aerial still and video capture system. With the gimble on this camera, we are able to take vertical pan shots.
With the Mavic, we are able to navigate areas that are otherwise hard to reach with larger drones, like the Inspire 1, as it is not just lightweight but can manoeuvre beautifully during flight. Each of the drones can stay overhead for around 20 minutes on one battery but we will have as many back up batteries as required for the scope of your project. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When you can use aerial photography
Aerial Photography has endless applications, from cartography to building surveys; film and tv to sporting events, weddings, real estate, and forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. One benefit of drone photography is that not only is it possible to gain images from a height, but it is also possible to achieve low down pictures as well.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Most television programmes now use drone shots to capture those interesting angles that can really help to add to the setting of a scene, or highlight a particular object or point of view.
Laws of drone photography
The Civil Aviation Authority has laws for the flying and use of commercial drones. When it comes to maintaining ethical boundaries and the highest levels of professionalism, you can trust Aerial Image Masters because we don’t fly beyond the parameters delineated by the laws.
According to the CAA, a drone has to: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be no less than 150 metres away from heavily populated parts not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
