What is aerial / drone photography?

In the not too distant past, a costly filming crew in a helicopter was the only viable way to get quality aerial shots of locations and events. This was usually the preserve of the large Hollywood blockbusters who had the budget to get these shots.

Now, with a small, lightweight, unmanned aircraft with state of the art cameras attached, one person can now easily gain the same spectacular film or photographs as the biggest film studios but at a fraction of the cost! By using a drone or small aircraft, you can achieve unique angles on any scene.

Professional drone photographers work as a team split between controlling the drone and manoeuvring the camera so as to achieve the best possible results.

The possibilities for aerial filming and photography are endless, from filming a sports event or gala, to adding something unique to a festivity or heritage video – the sky really is the limit!

AIM aerial photography System

At AIM we use DJI manufactured drones. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. The camera also comes with a 360-degree gimble, which ensures the stability of the camera even when drone movement is unpredictable, allowing us to cover every possible angle with ease.

We are able to deliver great shots on all still or video shoots due to the excellent features of the Inspire. The compact and versatile Mavic Pro is another drone product we use. The model is also capable of capturing excellent stills and videos as a result of a 4K camera. Vertical pan shots are easy on this drone due to the gimble.

The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. Both drones are capable of approximately 20 minutes of flight time with one battery and we have as many back up batteries as needed to ensure we get your shots. For smooth handheld shots, we bring the Sony A7 camera with a quality gimble to make sure we do not miss out on anything during the shoot.

When you can use aerial photography

There are many ways aerial photography has been found to be useful, from celebrations like weddings to entertainment and media, sporting events, real estate, cartography, forestry surveying. No matter what you would like to achieve with aerial photography, it is possible as there is really no limit to what you can do with it. Drone photography is not only good for taking pictures from higher altitudes, but also pictures for closer to the ground.

There’s no better substitute for a steady-cam than a drone due to the camera gimbles which make it stable. Drone shots are now wildly popular in television programmes where they are used to capture some of the most fascinating shots that are used to vary the setting of a scene, show an object better, or highlight a point of view.

Drone photography laws

Drones cannot be used indiscriminately as their use for commercial purposes is guided by the Civil Aviation Authority. Aerial Image Masters always fly within the parameters of these laws and remain at the top level of professional and ethical boundaries.

The CAA specifies that a drone must: remain within the pilot’s direct visual line of sight or VLOS be 150 metres or more away from places with congestion be within no more than 500 meters or 1,640ft of the pilot and not beyond 400ft above the ground at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ You don’t have to worry about the rules as we as the professionals are there to apply them to our work.

We are very experienced in drone law and we would love to talk through your project and ideas and discuss what we can do to get you the best possible footage.

Drone photography applications / clients

There are so many applications for aerial photography. You may find examples of some of our past projects below, but if you would like to do some other project, please let us know by contacting us:

Selling Real Estate

Do you halve a building you want to put up for sale? Would it benefit from a complete overview of the size and footprint of the grounds? Regular photographs are great, but are not sufficient for giving potential buyers a good look at a building, but we have captured several buildings to produce images and footage that paint the most accurate picture of a property and its features.

You can demonstrate the size and shape of your property as well as outline exactly where the building lies in relation to its surroundings, or any outhouses or land you may have. We will deliver whatever you need, even if you want regular pictures of the interior in addition to area and overhead shots to impress potential buyers.

Vacation home to let

How do you show your holiday let in the best possible light to your renters? You can give interior pictures that give an overview of the rooms, which is a must, but what if your potential guests are visiting your area or country for the first time? The best solution would be to add drone footage and pictures to portray your property in the best light.

In the promo video we created for Chez Mouret, the owners of the gates were provided with a tool with which to demonstrate the property’s layout in relation to the areas around.

Events & Music Videos

Aerial shooting will work perfectly for your music video shoot whether you are looking to throw in a mix of fascinating angles and dimensions or would prefer to shoot the whole video from an elevated angle. Aerial Image Masters is one of those who are taking music videos to a whole other level with aerial filming as they were charged with shooting the video for the newest single by Red Sky July.

By filming entirely with the drone, it was possible to gain not only the shots from above, but also close in and sweeping eye level shots. The versatility of the drone means that it is not necessary to have a steady-cam or Ronin in order to gain incredibly smooth, close-in footage. In case you are still not certain what a drone can do for your project, please feel free to reach out to us anytime and we’ll happily offer our expert advice.

Promo Films

Based on the numerous promotional films we have created for many businesses, we have found that aerial drone photographs and videos are capable of helping businesses achieve a more professional look. We enjoyed working with our clients at Mega Camps to produce their promotional film.

Mega Camps specialise in providing wonderful activities for children to engage themselves with during school holidays, from many bouncy castles to a monstrous slip’n’slide, and a go-cart track. With great help from the footage we were able to capture, Mega Camps was given the power to show exactly what they wanted customers to see, including the size and scope of their business, as well as their activities. For Boundless TV, we were pleased to film the exterior of the gigantic manor house where they record their programme.
