What does drone/aerial photography mean?
Until very recently, if you wanted to gain photographic images from the sky you would need to hire a helicopter and photographer or film crew at great expense. This meant that only well-funded TV and film companies were able to afford aerial shoots.
You can enjoy the same aerial shots as the biggest film studios without paying over the odds thanks to small, high-quality-camera drones that are available today! The aerial view presented by a drone can give an interesting take for any setting.
For professional photographers and filmmakers, a pilot and a camera operator work together in a team to make sure they get the best aerial pictures and footage.
There are no limits to the application of aerial filming and photography as it can be deployed everywhere from sports venues to heritage sites.
Our aerial photography equipment
Here at AIM, DJI-manufactured drones are our preferred choice for all of our aerial projects. The Inspire 1 has a 4k broadcast quality camera that allows for dramatic shots in all scenarios. There is no loss of detail on the Inspire 1 regardless of how much the drone moves during the shoot as a result of the 360-degree gimble image stabilisation feature of the drone.
The Inspire is able to deliver excellent shots at all times whether you are looking for still photographs or video. In addition to the Inspire, we use the compact and versatile Mavic Pro. This also has 4k enabled camera and can be used to capture incredible stills and video. Vertical shots are easy on theMavic due to the gimble attached to it.
The Mavic is a valuable tool in our arsenal because its portable nature and lightweight frame means it can be used in areas where the larger Inspire cannot perform. We can get up to 20 minutes of flight time on each of the drones but we always come prepared with a number of extra-batteriesfor the completion of each project. For the best hand held shooting results, we have the Sony A7 camera and a gimble to make sure we don’t miss out on any details over the course of the day.

Uses of aerial photography
There is a nearly limitless number of applications for aerial photography, including forestry surveying, building surveys, cartography, real estate, film and TV, sporting events, and celebrations or events, particularly weddings. There is really no cap on it; there are endless ways that aerial photography can be used. One benefit of drone photography which you might be unaware of is it is perfect for taking pictures closer to the ground as well as pictures from a height.
Drones have camera gimbleswhich have a stabilising effect, making them a suitable substitute for a steady-cam. Think of all the camera shots you see captured from interesting angles in television programmes, many of them are taken using drones which help to emphasise an object, give more character to a scene, or highlight a point of view.
Aerial photography laws
The use and flying of commercial drones is governed by the Civil Aviation Authority. You bet Aerial Image Masters follows these laws to the letter as we never exceed the boundaries provided by these laws.
The CAA specifies that a drone must: be within a range where the pilot can easily see it, that is, his visual line of sight (VLOS) be as far as 150 metres from places where there are many people not exceed 400ft above ground level and must remain within 500 meters (1,640ft) of the pilot and no more at no height, be flown directly above or as close as 50 metres to any property, vessels, vehicles, or persons if none of these are ‘under the pilot’s control’ Forget about remembering every single rule because the laws are for us to apply as we do what we do.
We know drone law like the back of our hand and are eager to have you walk us through your ideas so we can come to an agreement on how to achieve the most perfect footage for your project.
